Frequently Asked Questions

Registration and payment

How can I sign up for Syndicate 2017?
Since we currently can not use PayPal to process payments, you can not sign up for Syndicate 2017 through directly. Instead we provide a straightforward registration form located here. The form will be familiar to those who have attended an edition of the Avalon tournament series. After your registration has been processed we will add you to our page manually, and we will still use to run our events during the tournament itself.

How can I sign up as a spectator?
You can sign up as a spectator simply by not selecting any events to participate in when filling in the registration form. The rest of the registration process is the same as described in the previous question (although you will not be added to the list). There is currently no cap for spectators.

Is there a minimum age for registration?
No, everybody is welcome to sign up!

How can I pay for Syndicate 2017?
Due to ongoing issues with PayPal it is currently not possible to pay with PayPal. However, we provide an alternative in the form of bank transfers. This is a straightforward alternative for anyone who lives in a country that is a part of the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) region. If you are not in a SEPA country, please contact us and we’ll try to find a solution.

Is my registration confirmed if I haven't paid yet?
No, we can only confirm your registration and add you to the list on once your payment has been received. Please note that the venue fee you have to pay is based on the date we receive your payment, not on the date you submit the registration form, so we advise you to pay as soon as possible to avoid having to pay a higher venue fee.

How long will it take for my payment to be confirmed?
If you transfered the money from a Dutch bank account we will generally be able to confirm your payment within 48 hours. If you used a bank account from a different country than The Netherlands, we hope to be able to confirm your payment within five working days. However, international bank transfers can sometimes take quite a while to arrive, so please be patient. If you suspect something went wrong with your payment and we still haven't confirmed it after a week, please contact us.

I signed up for the tournament but can not attend. Can I get a refund?
Yes, please contact us to get a refund.

How do I travel to Syndicate 2017?
If you are in The Netherlands, you’re in luck! Syndicate is hosted in De Jaarbeurs, right next to the largest train station in the country, Utrecht central station. For those traveling to Syndicate 2017 from outside The Netherlands, please check out our dedicated travel options page for more information.

I’m coming by car. Where can I park?
The Netherlands is notorious for its expensive parking space. However, the city of Utrecht provides an inexpensive alternative in the form of four 'P+R' parking spaces located at the outskirts of the city near the major highways. Two of these locations (Westraven and Papendorp) also have a hotel located within walking distance. More information can be found here (PDF) .

Where can I stay near the venue?
Being one of the largest cities in The Netherlands, Utrecht provides plenty of hotels, hostels and Airbnb rooms for you to stay at. Besides this you can travel to the venue in less than thirty minutes by train from Amsterdam, where many options for accommodation are available. Please check out our dedicated accommodation page for more information.

Where can I eat near the venue?
The venue itself provides some limited catering on the venue floor and downstairs in the lobby. Besides this Utrecht central station, the largest train station in The Netherlands, is right next to the venue and provides plenty of options for foods and drinks, including super markets, fast food restaurants, sandwich restaurants and coffee houses. A helpful overview of all restaurants can be found here.

Am I allowed to consume my own food and drinks in the venue?

What is the cap for each event?
Our initial cap will be put at 512 players (256 for each game), but can be raised based on interest and resources. The cap for teams events is 128 teams (256 players). For the Project M side event the initial cap for singles is 64, which can be raised to 128 if at least 16 setups can be arranged. For Project M teams the cap is 32 teams (64 players), which we unfortunately can not raise because of time restrictions.

How will the prize money be distributed?
The top 8 will be paid out based on attendance. All event fees will go 100% towards the pot of the respective events. The tentative payouts are as follows:

For singles

  • 1st place: 40%
  • 2nd place: 25%
  • 3rd place: 12,5%
  • 4th place: 7,5%
  • 5th place: 5%
  • 7th place: 2,5%

For teams
  • 1st place: 50%
  • 2nd place: 30%
  • 3rd place: 15%
  • 4th place: 5%

Am I allowed to use a modified controller?
Since the debate about controller modifications is currently ongoing and little information is available about their impact on gameplay in a competitive setting, we will give modified controllers the benefit of the doubt for now. However, we are closely following the discussion and might make slight changes to the rulesets depending on its outcome.

Does this event somehow involve gambling?
We believe all games in the Super Smash Bros. franchise to be games of skill and therefore should not be considered gambling activities. That being said, the Dutch government does not have an official stance on the legal status of the Super Smash Bros. games.

What is The Matrix?
Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.
